Interviewer: What books are you embarrassed not to have read yet?
Miranda July: I’m not embarrassed about not having read any book. What you stumble upon (and when) is personal and important and probably fated. You find each thing as you need it, and plenty of important books you will never need in the short flame of your life. The moment I feel pressure to read a book, I instinctively rebel against it–which is probably one reason I didn’t last long in college.

Sometimes it feels like I find just the book or article I need to find at every moment.
Other times, it’s good to get out of “autopilot” and read something someone assigns or suggests to me.
Are our reading lists “personal and important and probably fated”?
